Prezzee Faces Major US Fraud, Reports AU$79.2M Loss

Australian-based Prezzee's customers buy and send digital gifts from ~1,400 retailers ranging from Coles Group in Australia to SEPHORA in the USA (where over half its revenue comes from). It's been hit by significant fraud in the USA on up to 30% of transactions (that levels 0.3% to 0.7% in Australia). The fraud's driven a statutory loss of Au$79.2 m for the 18 months to December (after an Au$38.9m loss in the previous financial year). Total card sales were $3.4bn in 2023 after selling $1.1bn in 2022. -
Australian Retail Loyalty Report: Data Sharing Reluctance Rises

The Australian Loyalty Association's retail loyalty report with Power Retail found 60% of Australians are reluctant to share their data with retailers. Following multiple recent data breaches, 81% of Australians prefer email communications with SMS attracting concerns about scams. Westpac is the only Big 4 bank not to run Pega and wrote off $70m attempting to build an in-house sollution called In the Moment and now uses Adobe Journey Optimizer. Commonwealth Bank is the market leader for real-time interaction management (RTIM). It has 10 years of experience using Pegasystems and it's customer engagement engine makes 53 million calls a day. The bank runs thousands of experiments simultaneously. -

Qantas has completed the acquisition of TripADeal with Au$450m in revenue and 150 employees. It acquired a minority stake in 2022 and has now bought the remaining 49% for $211m. TripADeal will sit under Qantas Loyalty with about 80 per cent of the travel company’s customers Qantas frequent flyers. Since the integration in 2022, billions of points have been earned and used through TripADeal packages. -

Medibank Faces $21.5 Trillion Fine in Privacy Breach Case

Technically, Medibank could face a fine of $21.5 trillion as a result of legal action taken by Australia’s privacy watchdog the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) for the theft of personal details of 9.7 million Australians in a 2022 cyberattack. If it loses (and it's defending the action) it'll pay a fraction of that. Medibank is already the subject of four class actions relating to the cyberattack. -

SkyCity Entertainment Group is appealing a tax decision (which could cost it NZ$33 million) about the treatment of its loyalty points. SkyCity believes reward points should not be counted as part of the revenue on which it is taxed. The state government disagreed as reward points can be used to gamble. The High Court had granted it special leave to appeal the matter. -

IAG Faces Class Action Over Loyalty Discount Failures

IAG (key brands include The NRMA, RACV, SGIO, SGIC) is the subject of a class action from Slater and Gordon Lawyers for failing to pass through loyalty discounts to customers in Victoria, Western Australia, and South Australia between 2018 and 2024. IAG has remediated customers $60m for the discounting failures. IAG has already been fined Au$40m for pricing failures at NRMA in June last year, and ASIC is suing IAG's brands SGIO, SGIC and RACV, alleging similar discount failures. -

CBA Launches Competitive Digital-Only Home Loan Rate

Commonwealth Bank announced a competitive digital-only home loan rate on 3 June. According to RateCity.com.au, CBA's moved from $2,000 sign-up cashback "that ultimately created customer churn, to a self-serve model which includes a lower advertised rate and an ongoing cashback perk". The loan's $10 a month fee can be refunded through CBA’s rewards program Yello. The offer is "a sign of CBA’s attempt to corner the “digital arms race,” in a show of force against rivals like ANZ, Bendigo and Macquarie". -

IAG Faces Class Action Over Alleged Pricing Algorithm Misuse

IAG has been hit with a class action by Slater and Gordon Lawyers claiming they secretly charged loyal customers higher prices via a pricing algorithm. Some customers were hit with a loyalty uplift in price that exceeded their loyalty discount. IAG is also the subject of an ongoing ASIC case alleging the same algorithm charged some customers likely to accept a higher premium a higher price at renewal.

Kogan First Loyalty Program Drives Profit Amid Controversy

Kogan.com describes its loyalty program Kogan First as “the north star of the business” to grow profits. Membership was 100,000 in 2020 and grew rapidly from 2021 when it automatically opted customers into a Kogan First trial at checkout. There are now 472,000 members and it's also lifted the annual fee from $99 to $129. These members account for 60% of sales and are a quarter of Kogan's active shoppers (shopped in the past 12 months). Blackwattle Investment Partners see the automatic opt-in as a dark pattern liable to be banned under future consumer protection laws currently being considered.

Privacy Amendment Bill Proposes New Data Collection Rules

The new Privacy Amendment Bill has had it's first reading in Parliament with final submissions due by June 14th. Proposed changes will mean organisations who collect personal information from other sources than the individual will need to update their privacy policies and ensure any automated systems are amended to include notifying individuals that their data has been collected. Organisations will need to plan exactly how this information can be made available to individuals, particularly in situations where you do not have a direct relationship with the individual.

Mi3Australia report Pizza Hut Australia has been slapped with a $2.5m fine for breaching spam laws. Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) investigation revealed that Pizza Hut sent 5,941,109 texts and emails to customers who had not consented or had withdrawn their consent to receive marketing.
